There is no doubt that your children are the best things that have ever happened to you. They bring joy and comfort most of the time but, let’s be honest, as a mum you can soon find yourself in a rut with a monotonous routine to boot. Up between 6 and 7am, the usually herding kids around the breakfast table, the last minute crisis as you head for the door, the drudge of the school run, the rushing home for forgotten PE kits, do I need to go on?
In amongst all this drama you may go to work. It may not be the best job in the world but, you have convinced yourself that it pays the bills, the hours are good, the boss is understanding, so why change?
Sometimes, the rut is a lonely place but there are changes you can make to climb out of it and, have a fulfilling career. “But I don’t know how to do anything else!”, I can hear you saying but with home learning courses you can upskill yourself in all kinds of skills and abilities, perfect for when you want to find a new job.
Even better, you don’t have to take time off from work because you can study when you want, when you can and when suits you. But what careers could be a good move?
Here are five great ideas:
1. Childcare
Looking after children in your own home is a great way of making use of the time that you are at home. It is a flourishing market too, with many parents relying on childminders to take care of their little ones whilst they work. Knowing they have someone caring, qualified and skilled to do so is peace of mind for them.
Most child minders look after preschool age children, with possibly older children for an hour or two at the end of the school day. Becoming a child minder is relatively simple. You will need to do a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, you will need to be registered with your local authority, hold a paediatric First Aid certificate and be qualified too. There are various courses that will see you enjoying a career as a child minder in no time.
2. Nursery nurse
If you don’t want to work at home, being a nursery nurse in a private or local authority run nursery is a great career move.
As well as working for someone else, you may want to consider starting your own business, either running a children’s nursery or an after school clubs, holiday clubs and so on.
There will always be a need for high quality child care provision so don’t think that by doing one qualification it means you can only work in a limited number of settings. As a parent, what childcare provision do you think is missing? Could you provide it?
3. Proof reader
Do you have an eye for detail? Can you concentrate for long periods? Do you have a high standard of English or another language? Do you have a love of reading? Are you organised?
If you answer yes to all of the above, then being a proof reader could be the perfect career move.
Businesses, charities, community groups, you name it, all produce a huge amount of printed and online materials. But mistakes can be costly, in more ways than one. Having someone proof read and edit their material can change it from being ‘ordinary’ to being ‘extraordinary’.
Most proof readers are selfemployed and can work with a wide variety of clients, as well as become specialised in certain areas such as law and so on.
4. Beauty treatments
From lip fillers to eye lash infills, to hair extensions to waxing, the beauty industry is thriving. In Britain, it is a billion pound industry and not just for women. Men are becoming more aware of the need to be groomed, taking advantage of all kinds of treatments.
As well as working in a salon, you could work from home too. This can often make treatments cheaper as you have lower overheads, and can contribute to making your beauty business a success.
Make sure you have the right qualifications, however, so that you can buy the right public liability insurance.
5. Counselling
Mental health issues and illnesses are no longer hidden, with more and more people seeking counselling to work through various issues.
If you can actively listen to people, remain detached and impartial, and yet caring, then counselling could be the career for you. You will need to understand your own motivations for being a counsellor and you can do this with a variety of courses.
Once you have a firm foundation, you can start offering counselling services. You can be self- employed or work for a local employer or health board.
Getting out of a rut is not always easy but a home study course is a rung on the ladder as you climb out to a better place.

This is an awesome short list, Franca. I think that what you have here are some really good ideas and I like the fact that they are primarily freelance jobs that can be done when it’s convenient. That said, how do you feel about blogging to make some extra money? I mean, you do this yourself and I’d have to assume it’s somewhat lucrative for you to continue doing it.
