If you are a regular reader of my blog, you will know by now that I’m not originally from the UK. I was born in Peru. This means that my knowledge about the English Curriculum is not very good. As a mum, I struggle a lot because it is not easy for me to help Bella with her homework. She is now in Year 2 and she has a lot of reading to do every day plus weekly homework. Sometimes I feel like she has a lot to do considering she is only 7 years old.
The Peruvian Curriculum is completely different to the British National Curriculum. Bella often brings homework which I feel that I can’t help her as much with. I know it sounds really bad but it’s true. As parents we are always trying to find ways to help our kids to understand better what they have learnt at school.
Nick normally helps Bella with her homework because he knows better how it works, although sometimes even he struggles. I want to be able to help my daughter without feeling that I don’t know what I am doing. I understand that doing homework can be boring for kids. It was for me! I don’t want Bella to feel that learning is boring!
It is important that our kids are engaged in tasks that they will find fun but at the same time they are able to learn. I am open to anything that can help provide this for our kids. Making learning fun can be a big challenge for parents. We don’t always know how to teach our children to learn effectively or we don’t even know what is on the curriculum. I think it is very hard for parents.
I was recently introduced to Education Quizzes which is a great resource for parents. It is a subscription website that helps parents or even teachers to login and select the relevant Key Stage for their children. They bring education to life with the use of quiz questions, pictures and engaging feedback. I thought this was a fantastic idea! I know my girls will be more engaged if they learn through quizzes. The fun factor is what makes this resource successful.
It is very easy to browse the Education Quizzes website. Everything is very clear. The quizzes are written by teachers that know the National Curriculum very well. You can select different Key Stages to suit the level of your child. They have KS1, KS2, 11-Plus, KS3, GCSE. They also has ESL which is English as a Second Language. I thought it was really good that they included this.
Once you are in each Key Stage, you will then see a breakdown by subject: Art and Design, Computing, D and T, English, Geography, History, Maths, etc. Bella is in Year 2 so she is Key Stage 1 (KS1). This stage is for kids from 5 to 7 years and that are in Year 1 and Year 2.
Key Stage 1 lays the foundation for education, so it is very important to help our kids at this stage. It is a time when lots of new things happen to them. It is crucial that we make sure the learning part of their life is fun and engaging.
We have been trying the quizzes with Bella and she has enjoyed them. She thinks the quizzes are fun and she actually liked doing them. She doesn’t see them as homework or related to school. She sees them as way to keep her entertained and perhaps have some fun time with mummy although sometimes she does it on her own.
Each question will tell you if it is correct or not and it will also give an explanation as to why the answer is correct or wrong so children understand better why they made a mistake and of course they can learn from it. Bella loves nature so she has also been doing some quizzes from the Nature Matters section.
SUBSCRIPTION
A subscription to Education Quizzes costs £9.95 a month, for unlimited access and it can be cancelled at any time, even during the first month. I think this is great especially when you have kids with different ages like us. They are also incentives for school subscriptions. The idea is that depending on the number of students at a school, the subscription will be cheaper (the more the merrier) which means that it could be as little as £2.00 per year. This could be a fantastic resource for schools.
If you would like more information about this fantastic website, you can read all about it HERE.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I think this is a brilliant idea. Anything that will make our children’s learning journey enjoyable, fun and engaging gets a thumbs up from us. Bella always struggles at the start of the school year. I think it is related to her age as her birthday is one of the last ones in her year. I think this definitely influences her level at school. She always manage to catch up with her friends by the second half of the year so these quizzes have been fantastic to help her achieve that. She thinks they are a game so she is keen to play them more, so she has been having fun but she is also learning a lot at the same time. This resource is a big help for parents and schools too.
Do you also struggle as a parent when is time to help your kids with their learning at home? What do you do to help them? Have you heard of Education Quizzes before? What do you think about the idea of using quizzes?
