I don’t know about you, but I adore this time of the year. The start of Spring is one of my favourite times of the year, with the sun breaking through the clouds, seeing the beautiful flowers bloom, watching the days get brighter and looking forward to all those afternoons relaxing in the garden. This is also the time of the year where we start to make plans for lots of family adventures, so today I thought that I would share some of my favourite days out for families in Norfolk. I have lived in Norfolk for many years, and it’s a beautiful place to live with every turn you make there’s always a beautiful new discovery.
THE NORFOLK COAST
Walcott
I have to say that I do feel so lucky to live so close to so much of the beautiful coastline. Breathing in the fresh sea air of the tranquil Norfolk coast, walk on the unspoiled sand where my little girl can build sandcastles, paddle, have a picnic, walk the dog, you are certainly not short of a few ideas. So whether you prefer the beach with beautiful cliffs in Hunstanton, beach huts and boats in Wells-Next-The-Sea, peaceful walks along the promenade at Walcott, or action-packed adventures at Great Yarmouth, there really is something for everyone. As a family, we have created so many beautiful memories of all of these places.
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Farmer Fred’s Adventure Play Barn
There are some wonderful local attractions to see in Norfolk that are open all year round. Banham Zoo, Dinosaur Park, Church Farm, Amazonia Zoo and Sealife Centre in Great Yarmouth and Hunstanton are our favourites. There are a couple of attractions that come highly recommended that we plan on visiting this year, places such as Africa Alive, Bewilderwood, High Ash Farm. If you’re looking for something inside then adventure play areas would be more up your street. Our favourite without a doubt is Farmer Fred’s Adventure Playbarn, Play Today, Tots Town, and Adventure Island.
If you’re looking for something a little different, Norfolk has some wonderful gems waiting to be discovered. At the Norfolk Broads, you can discover the magical Waterland and vast diverse wildlife, Sandringham Estate is full of exciting things to see as well as the surrounding woodlands and walks. Norwich Castle is full of fascinating exhibits, and not forgetting all the host of castle ruins that have been beautifully maintained all over Norfolk.
WOODLANDS & WALKS
Thetford Forest
Not only is Norfolk blessed with beautiful coastlines and local attractions there are so many woodlands and walks throughout the whole of Norfolk just waiting to be explored and discovered. Thetford Forest is the ultimate adventure forest, whether it’s cycled trails of varying difficulty, riding tracks or high ropes courses. There are plenty of walks to look out for local wildlife and forage for hidden gems. High Lodge also has loads going on at any time of the year, including walks, plenty of play equipment and it even has a musical forest which is a lot of fun.
Take a gentle ramble through Burlingham Woods with a mixture of mature woodland and more recent wood and orchard plantings with three easy circular walks of one mile, two miles and three miles. Fairhaven Woodland & Water Garden is another great choice to take little ones with a children’s trail, boat trips, tea room, gift shop, plant sales and possibly the oldest living thing in Norfolk. There’s a magical feel to walking in the woods at Fairhaven with ancient oaks, beech and native trees. There are three miles of easy walking, pushchair friendly, woodland trails with views across the private broads.
Hopefully, that’s given you a few ideas for inspiration when it comes to choosing days out with the family. These places mentioned are some of our favourites, there is so much to discover in Norfolk so go out and explore the adventure!
