Have you ever been away around Christmas time? It is such a busy time of the year, getting away for a few days can be a great way to enjoy the holidays in the run-up to the big day, can’t it! This is what we thought when we were invited to stay at Woodcroft Cottage with Holidays at Home.
There is something lovely about being able to stay in a cottage when you are away from home and not a hotel. We do love staying at hotels, but I love the fact we can have somewhere to call our home for a few days when travelling.
TRAVELLING TO WOODCROFT COTTAGE
The cottage is located in Husdwell, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. We have been to Yorkshire before but we haven’t been to the Yorkshire Dales. The drive is more than 4 hours which is a little bit long for the girls to do in a single journey so we stopped by Nick’s parents in the Midlands as well as at the motorway services on the way. This way we all managed to stretch our legs and have something to eat. The girls certainly need to do this very often, LOL!
ARRIVING AT WOODCROFT COTTAGE
It was quite late when we arrived but this wasn’t a problem. There is a safe box with a code which you use to get your keys. We thought this was a great idea so we didn’t disturb anyone and there was no need for anyone to wait for us to arrive and show us in.
There was an off road private parking bay next to the cottage which had some clear signs so you couldn’t miss it. It is actually facing the side of the property and was very handy to have.
Girls next to the Christmas Tree
Checkin via the Information Tablet
They left the property ready for us. The heating was on as well as some lights. There was even a Christmas Tree too as we visited in the few days before Christmas. An information tablet was left in the kitchen for us. We needed to check in using it and then we had access to all the information we needed to know about the cottage. I thought this was very cool and modern.
The house is beautiful. It has two bedrooms which sleep up to four people. The living room is so cosy and has a log burner which was perfect to keep us warm during the chilly winter weather. It was very cold whilst we were there.
Kitchen View
The kitchen was large and very comfortable with everything that you could possibly need. They left a lovely hamper for us with basic things so we could have a cup of tea and some bread when we arrived. Nick took the girls to a supermarket, in nearby Richmond to buy some food for our stay.

THE ROOMS AND ENSUITES AT WOODCROFT COTTAGE
Girls’ Room
Girls’ Bathroom
The rooms were so comfortable and big too. The girls loved their bedroom and especially their bathroom because it had a big bath. They love having a bath so they were super excited.
Master bedroom
Stairs that take you to the bathroom
The master bedroom is a dream with stairs that take you to the bathroom. The bed is a comfy king size bed! Love it! It had a large freestanding bath and separate walk-in shower. I had the best long and warm bath there!
USING THE HOT TUB
Woodcroft Cottage also comes with a hot tub which was one of the things the girls were super excited about. Instructions are provided for this which we needed to read carefully. You are supposed to let the water cool down for about 24 hours otherwise it is too hot to get in. There was also information about the edge which you need to be very careful with kids.
Thankfully, our hot tub was already running for us but we needed to wait until the next day to try it properly. The following morning we woke up and had a lovely breakfast in the kitchen and then we changed into our swimsuits to get inside the hot tub. This was a challenge at the end because the water was still super hot and the girls and I couldn’t get in. We sat at the edge for a little bit but it was too cold to be outside and too hot to be inside so we went back inside the house. But Nick bravely got inside the hot tub and loved it!
EXPLORING THE AREA & VISITING AYSGARTH FALLS
Aysgarth Falls
There are so many things to do with kids in Yorkshire. The house was so comfortable that we didn’t want to leave it, LOL. However, we decided to go and explore in the afternoon so we went to see Aysgarth Falls. It is about 26 minutes away from the cottage. Aysgarth Falls is a triple flight of falls that stretch out over a mile on the River Ure, the falls have plenty of good paths in the vicinity for walking in the woods and has a nearby visitor centre.
It was a gorgeous and lovely place to get outside in the winter air. After this, we decided to walk around and ended up at the National Park Centre. They had a cafe which we went to have a quick drink but it was closed. During the winter they have reduced hours. Another issue was that they opened during the weekends only and we visited during the week. But it was nice to walk around anyway.
We then visited Richmond, which is a historic market town. Richmond is full of character and is definitely worth a walk around if you visit. There are many shops, cafes and restaurants for you to browse. For dinner, we had a really lovely meal at Turf Hotel. After our meal, we headed back to the cottage as it was very dark, cold and wet. We had spent a few hours out and about so the girls were tired and they really loved the cottage so they were excited to head back.
OUR THOUGHTS
Family Photo
We only stayed for 2 nights so it was a quick visit but we really enjoyed it and tried to do the most we could in that time. I can definitely recommend Holidays At Home. Woodcroft Cottage was lovely and they have great customer service. They were very happy to help and answer any queries we had. This cottage is also perfect for families with dogs so if you have a dog make a note of it because they will love it too! Have a look at this site for some ideas of days out with the family, Yorkshire to do with the kids.
Have you been to North Yorkshire? Are you more of a cottage/self catering person or do you prefer a hotel with a restaurant and reception for all your need?
*Disclosure: We were invited to stay at Woodcroft Cottage thanks to Holidays at Home for the purpose of this review. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks for stopping by,
Love you all ❤️
