How To Make The Most Of Space In A Small RV Rental

amomentwithfranca · 16 August 2020 · 18 Comments

How to make the most of space in a small RV: Travelling with a small RV rental is an exciting way to discover nature and experience life in remote places. While hotels can be restricting, hiring a camper will grant you the freedom to explore and head off the beaten track, away from the typical tourist sights.

An RV holiday requires you to pack almost everything you’ll need on your trip, from food to supplies. Some will come equipped with appliances like kettles, but make sure to check prior to your departure to avoid leaving anything important behind. To learn more about the types of small RV rentals available and how to get the best deal, click here. Remember, space in most compact campervans is limited, so pack wisely.

In this article, you’ll learn how to make the most of space in a small RV.

Use Removeable Hooks

If you’re planning to rent an RV, it’s important you take care of the vehicle and keep it in the same state or condition as before it was rented. Otherwise, you may have to pay maintenance costs. One great way to maximize space without drilling, cutting, or removing any part of the small RV is using removable hooks. These can be easily used to hang clothes or bags without causing any permanent damage. There are self-adhesive and magnetic varieties, depending on how much you want to spend, and the space available in the camper.

Clothes Storage

A variety of clothes, from jackets to jeans, tops, and undergarments, are essential when you’re on a family road trip. However, packing too much can cause problems in a small RV. Try to plan for the weather you expect in the region you’re travelling to, and pack basic items that can be layered in cooler conditions.

Here are some clothing storage options and packing suggestions for those planning an RV vacation:

  • To minimize clothes, create a capsule wardrobe with basic colours like black and grey. The idea of a capsule wardrobe is to limit your luggage to only the ones you’ll surely wear during the trip.
  • Use the inside wall of cabinet doors to hang items.
  • If there are no drawers inside the RV, purchase sweater cubbies or portable organizers.
  • Make use of space by using folding clothes hangers. The best hangers are lightweight, non-corroding and sturdy. Additionally, self-adhesive wall mount hangers can also help you save space.

Drawer Installation Under The Table

Create extra storage space for utensils, kitchen appliances, and other items by installing a portable drawer under the main dining table. The DIY drawer’s depth and size will depend on the seating and space, so be sure to measure prior to purchasing. A collapsible basket makes a good alternative.

Maximize Space

Some small RV rentals have additional storage compartments separate to indoor cupboards; they may be accessible from the outside, under the bed, or open up like a basement. Make the most out of these compartments by using properly-labeled bins and store anything you don’t need to use frequently out of the way.

Here are some other suggestions to maximize space:

  • Wrap extension cords up and hang them with adhesive hooks.
  • If you’re going on a long trip, consider installing portable pull-out draws for easy access to deep storage.
  • Reserve one storage area for dirty clothing.

Eliminate Unnecessary Clutter

The thought of travelling long-term in a small campervan may tempt you to pack additional things. But before cramping your rental with unnecessary clutter, create a camping preparation checklist or list of items you really need. If you have additional space after packing the essentials, then you can add those extra bits and pieces.

Some important items to pack on your RV trip include:

  • Electrical accessories like adapters, surge protectors, extension cords, and flashlights.
  • Vehicle essentials such as a tire pressure gauge, leveling blocks, shovel, and battery jumper cables.
  • Cooking and eating utensils, including cups, plates, bowls, cutlery, cutting boards, and tongs. You may also like to pack small appliances like a kettle or toaster if your RV rental doesn’t come with them.
  • Food staples like spices, cooking oil, cereals, snacks, and canned foods. Perishable items like bread, milk, and eggs can be purchased as you need them.
  • Clothing for all conditions, sturdy shoes, toiletries, and daily staples like towels, pillows, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses

Conclusion

Space in a small RV may be limited, so it’s important that you plan in advance and pack appropriately. Prior to your trip, find out what your camper will come equipped with, and what you need to bring. Then, consider portable storage solutions like removeable hooks and drawers.

By eliminating unnecessary items and using the space effectively, you’ll ensure a comfortable journey.
