We are always thinking about potential holiday destinations we could visit for that perfect dream family holiday. At first this might seem easy, but it can actually be quite difficult to cater for everyone in the family. Not everyone wants to sit on a beach all day but I don’t want to return from holiday in need of a rest either! One strong candidate for a dream family destination is the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Several months ago, I wrote a post covering 5 Great Things To Do In Mauritius which gave a sample of 5 great activities you can do whilst there. In this post I’m going to look at why Mauritius is a dream destination for families, providing lots to see and do for the whole family.
Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean about 1200 miles off the Southeast coast of Africa. At just 38-miles by 29-miles, the island is by no means large, with a population of about 1.3 million people. It is known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs. The south and west coasts are characterised by huge stretches of white golden sand. There is a vast range of landscapes and activities to explore including lagoons, reefs, rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and exotic wildlife. As a destination, Mauritius definitely offers variety.
Mauritius offers world-class resorts, fabulous beaches, and fun nature reserves that will keep young ones entertained for hours, making it a great place to travel with children. Most of the island’s resorts have kids clubs with dedicated staff to look after children, offering plenty of activities and events to keep them busy and entertained.
As a family, we all love the beach so we will be in heaven enjoying the spectacular beaches that Mauritius has to offer. There are plenty of marine based activities to keep families entertained, and I’m pretty sure the girls (and me!) would love the opportunity to see dolphins in their natural habitat, as they can often be seen playing in the Mauritian waters as the sun rises.
Obviously the beaches are one of the things that Mauritius is renowned for. However, it doesn’t stop there though as that’s not the only thing to do, and if your children are like ours, they can never be in one place for too long! There are more great family experiences available across the island including amusement parks, museums, sports activities and nature trails.
For example, if history is your thing, here are some museums you can visit – all interesting places for the whole family:
- Blue Penny Museum, home of the world’s most expensive stamp!
- National History Museum where the bones of the Dodo are kept!
- Mahebourg Naval Museum where you can learn about the 1810 battle between the French and British navies
- Frederick Hendrick Fort built where Dutch settlers first erected a fort in 1638.
Given that Mauritius is not a large island, it may be hard to believe that you can go on safari and get close to some African animals! You could be feeding a giraffe, or walking with lions! La Vanille Nature Park is an example of somewhere you can visit to see some great animals, and was one of the places I featured in my previous post.
Mauritius has something for all the family, from amazing nature experiences, visiting its historic past or just enjoying the fabulous beaches, it really is a dream destination. You can learn more about what Mauritius has to offer here.
What do you think about Mauritius as a family destination? What do you think about what it has to offer? Please leave a comment below as I would love to read what you think.
