We have been in our flat since 2007 which is about 9 years and we have never made any changes to our kitchen. This is something that we wanted to do a couple of years ago before Sienna was born but we never had the time to do it. I would like to give it a makeover at some point and was checking online for new trends and new ideas for 2016. I came across Mayfair Granite, which is one of the premier producers of granite worktops in the UK. They specialise in granite worktops for Kitchens, Restaurants & Bars, and use only the finest quality granite.
They have recently released some of their new kitchen trend predictions for 2016 discussing all aspects of the kitchen including flooring, cabinet design, worktops and appliances, so let’s see what they have come up with and let’s see if we can use them when renovating our kitchen:
Colourful Cabinets
Apparently, a big trend that will be popular this year is contrasting cabinets. Combining different colours, textures and materials into one room will give the overall design depth and produce an eye-catching and exciting space.
I’m all for colourful cabinets. One of the changes that we want to do in our kitchen is to have all the cabinets in red as it will go perfectly with the red that we have used for our living room as our flat has the kitchen, living room and dining room as one open space. It will look great if everything follows the same colour scheme.
Also open shelving is predicted to be big in 2016, however I’m not sure if this is something that I’m willing to do at the moment as having a small kitchen I really need to get the most of the space so hiding lots of things behind the colourful cabinets is still what I need to do, lol. The day we move to a bigger space with a bigger kitchen I would love to have open shelving.
Bold Appliances
People rarely move beyond standard coloured kitchen appliances, tending to go safe with either white black or stainless steel. All of that is going to change this year, as people introduce colourful cabinets and sinks to their kitchens. Bright, vibrant colours are bang on trend for 2016, allowing people to show off their individualism and their appliances in style.
I would love to have all my appliances in red. As you can see this is the colour that I’m going for now. Probably after I get tired of it I will go back to neutral colours! But red and white is what I’m loving at the moment.
Luxurious Worktops
Granite and Quartz worktops have always been a popular choice for the kitchen due to their durability and quality look and this year is no exception. Advances in production and cutting techniques now mean that granite and quartz worktops are more affordable than ever and can fit seamlessly into the kitchen with the minimum of hassle. Dark greys and blacks are trending right now, perfect for creating a luxurious look.
I love granite and quartz worktops. They really look very pretty and it brings a touch to your kitchen. It also looks very elegant and chick.
Pendant lighting and LED strips
Lighting is key to creating the right balance of ambience and function in the kitchen. Gone are the days of harsh strip lights and recessed lighting, 2016 will see the emergence of pendant lighting and under cabinet lighting. Pedant lights can create a relaxing environment in the kitchen, while under cabinet lighting provides better visibility for tasks such as food preparation and chopping. Low voltage light strips are also a good choice for illuminating inside and above cabinets to create a dynamic effect.
I love pendant lighting. I think it looks great and elegant and it gives some personality to your kitchen. Yes, I think this is definitely a great trend for 2016.
Large-format Flooring and luxury vinyl
Tiles have always been a popular choice for kitchen floors as they are hard wearing, easy to clean and available in a wide range of colours, and this year will be no exception. Mayfair Granite predicts that 2016 will see Large-Format tiles becoming even more popular; these larger tiles mean less grout lines leading to a much cleaner look, something that will be popular this year as sleek designs continue to be king.
Vinyl flooring has come a long way since the peel-and-stick stuff from the 1970s and will also be a popular choice this year. Luxury vinyl combines the high quality realistic look of hardwood or stone with the durability of vinyl making it a natural fit for the kitchen.
We have tiles in our kitchen and we are actually happy with them. We are not planning any changes to the flooring this time. Tiles are very easy to clean which is very important when you have small children. We tried some modern vinyl flooring recently which had a wood flooring effect. This was within our storage room, so I think it could be a great alternative.
Colourful Sinks
Much like kitchen cabinets, sinks are trending away from basic white and stainless steel. The bright and vibrant colours now coming onto the market are a great way of adding a splash of colour to a neutral kitchen or to create an eye-catching focal point that really gives a kitchen that wow factor.
I’m not sure if I will go for this new trend as having the cabinets and the appliance in one colour will mean having too much colour and I think it will be a distracting. However, I think this will work if you only implement some colours to some parts.
What do you think of these new kitchen trends for 2016? Are you thinking of redecorating your kitchen? Is there something that you might use from these ideas? Leave me a comment below as I would love to read what you think.

I am loving all the colour. Most kitchens are so boring and standard; they look like everyone else’s kitchen. I think the bold colours are a brilliant idea.

I like the bold appliances. You can mix and match colors with your plain colored theme so that the appliances are highlighted. I love your ideas! Thank you for sharing this.

I prefer the colorful appliances over the colorful sinks. I’m not sure if the color on those sinks would last a lifetime.
