It’s a shame us mums don’t get paid for what we do. It’s a demanding 24 hour job, with a shift that lasts 7 days a week, 365 days a year! You can often find me working as a cleaner, chef, taxi driver, waitress, doctor, stylist, counsellor, teacher, personal assistant – you name it! I think the list is endless! Of course as hard as this can be, we wouldn’t expect to be paid to be a mother to our own children. It is however, an interesting thought to consider what our contribution to the household actually is.
As I’ve shared before, I studied and practised as a lawyer but when it came to having children I wanted something that would fit in with my role as a mum. This is one of the reasons I became a blogger, so I can be around for my kids when they need me but also work at the same time. It will be a long time however before I might expect to earn as much as I could working in law!
You can try this Parent Salary calculator which helps you to work out what your ‘parent salary’ would be. This is based on the salaries of people doing similar jobs. Try out the calculator to see what your salary would be.
Whilst this is a fun thing to do, it’s easy to underestimate this cost but this could have serious consequences for your family. Whilst there’s no way you can be replaced as mum, life insurance could provide money to help out with some of these things you do should the worst happen. At the least, its definitely worth considering what impact this would have.
What do you think about the Parent Salary calculator? Have you considered how life insurance could help if the worst happens? Please leave a comment as I would love to read your thoughts.
