The summer holidays are here and, after a worrisome week of torrential rain, are hotter than ever. With kids at home and the encroaching sun threatening your peace, it’s only right that you put a little effort towards entertaining the little ones – even if just in favour of some relaxation on your part!
Sitting down to watch a film is the perfect way to navigate this, with minimal prep and maximal sitting-down culminating in some lovely quality time with your children. But what are the best summer films that you should watch?
Four Of The Best Summer Films To Watch With Your Kids
Up

Up is arguably animation studio Pixar’s masterpiece. Its story is equal parts pulp-adventure romp, heartwarming coming-of-age comedy and emotive journey of discovery – concerning crotchety pensioner Carl, his eager boy-scout charge, a balloon-powered floating house and (of course) a talking dog. It has a message for about everyone that watches it, and the gorgeous (albeit digital) locales of its second half are pure summer vibes.
As far as films of blu-ray go, you can’t get more maximalist than this at-once touching and thrilling animated adventure. As a millennial parent, though, you might want to avert your eyes for the first five minutes; no one needs to go through that heartbreak again.
The Parent Trap

Let’s dare to go a tad further back, to the halcyon days of Lindsay Lohan’s child-actor career. If this summer is to be anything for your children, it is one of education – and film history lessons are well underway. The Parent Trap is, on the surface, a twee family comedy concerning the estrangement-from-birth of two identical twins (both played by Lohan).
But in practicality, the film is much more than that. It’s a genuine journey, an exploration of what it means to be a sibling, and (for the parents) a reason to look at a younger Dennis Quaid for the best part of an hour.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

“Bueller…Bueller…Bueller…” Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of the most quotable films of the 1980s, and effortlessly iconic to boot. Dated as it may seem to today’s more digitally-attached generation, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off remains a thrilling glimpse at devil-may-care, taking place across one early-summer day towards the end of high school for Bueller and hypochondriac friend Cameron Frye.
This is a nostalgic masterpiece of late-20th-century writing, with stellar performances from Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck and Jennifer Grey – and a clever enough script that there’s always something for us adults to grab onto as well.
Inside Out 2
Last but by no means least, we come to a film that promises to be the film of the summer: Inside Out 2. This hotly-anticipated Pixar sequel is in cinemas just in time for the summer holidays, and a perfect opportunity to get the kids out of the house for a multiplex adventure. The film meets Riley and her emotions as they hit the uncharted waters of teen-dom, and introduces some complex new characters in the process.
Conclusion
These four films offer a fantastic mix of adventure, humour, and heartwarming moments, making them some of the Best Summer Films for family movie nights. Whether you’re reliving classic tales or discovering new favourites, each movie promises to create lasting memories with your kids. So grab some popcorn, gather the family, and enjoy these timeless films that are sure to entertain and inspire viewers of all ages.
