This week Nick and I attended a performance of Agatha Christie’s Witness For The Prosecution at The London County Hall. I love Agatha Christie murder mysteries – we loved The Mousetrap – and this one doesn’t disappoint. Witness For The Prosecution is a courtroom drama which I found really interesting given my legal background. Now in its sixth year at the venue, it is set in The Chamber at London County Hall – you couldn’t ask for a better setting.
Witness For The Prosecution County Hall Review
Witness For The Prosecution is based on one of Agatha Christies 1925 short stories (‘Traitor Hands’) and adapted for the theatre. The main protagonist, Leonard Vole is arrested for the murder of Emily French, a wealthy widowed older woman. Will Vole survive the shocking witness testimony, will he be able to convince the jury, and you of his innocence and escape the hangman’s noose?
The case against him looks overwhelming. Having become a friend of the rich old lady, the victim, he inherited her money and was seen with blood on his clothes on the night she was found murdered. Even his wife refuses to support his alibi, turning against him.
The courtroom setting of The Chamber gives the play a truly immersive feeling – it’s even possible to book seats in the Jury section. The cast really does a great job with their characters, Romaine the straight-talking wife of Vole played by Naomi Sheldon is a great character. I must emphasise though that it is the venue and how it is used for this play that really makes it the true star of the show. Check my Instagram Highlight to see footage of the venue.
Overall, this play was amazing! If you like a good murder mystery, then this is the show for you!
