1. Choose your destination carefully

When planning a budget-friendly trip, it’s important to carefully consider your destination. Some destinations are more expensive than others, so it’s important to do your research and find a destination that fits your budget.

2. Avoid tourist traps

Tourist traps are usually placed where the prices are inflated and the quality of goods or services is not as good as what you can find elsewhere. If you’re looking to save money while travelling, it’s best to avoid these places.

3. Get travel insurance

Travel insurance can be a lifesaver, especially if you’re embarking on a long or expensive trip. It can help protect you from cancelled flights, lost luggage, and even medical emergencies while you’re away.

4. Travel off-season

If possible, try to travel during the off-season. This is typically when prices are lower and crowds are thinner. For example, travelling to Europe in the wintertime can be much cheaper than in the summer.

5. Book in advance

This is a great way to save money – by booking your flight, train tickets, or hotel accommodation well in advance. The closer to the departure date you get, the more expensive things will become. Also, when you travel overseas you can get in advance a Travel Sim Card from Sims Direct (For Australia) or Simify (Globally) and it will work anywhere in the world.

6. Or, in less touristy destinations, be spontaneous

If you’re looking to save money while travelling, one of the best things you can do is be spontaneous. Instead of planning each and every detail of your trip, leave some room for spontaneity.

7. Use Skyscanner to find the cheapest flight deals

Skyscanner is a website that allows you to search for the cheapest flights from your origin city to your destination city. Simply enter your departure and arrival cities, and Skyscanner will show you the best deals on flights.

8. Fly mid-week

When flying, try to book your tickets for a flight that is during the middle of the week. This will save you money, as flights during the weekend tend to be more expensive.

9. Pack well

When you’re packing for your trip, think about what you can bring with you that won’t take up a lot of space and that will be helpful. For example, think about bringing a small backpack instead of a suitcase, and bringing along a water bottle and snacks.

10. Be prepared to share

When it comes to travelling, especially if you’re on a budget, it’s always a good idea to be prepared to share. This means being willing to split costs with others, whether that be for accommodation, food, or transport.

11. Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is a great way to travel on a budget. You can stay with locals who are happy to show you around their city. This is a great way to meet new people and save money on accommodation.

12. Travel overnight

If you’re looking to save on travel costs, consider travelling overnight. By travelling overnight, you can avoid paying for a hotel room and save on transportation costs. You can also save on food costs by packing your own meals.

13. Read others’ backpacking experiences

Backpacking is a great way to travel on a budget. You can save money by camping and cooking your own food. You can also save money by avoiding tourist traps and expensive activities.

14. Search for free things to do in your chosen destination

When planning a trip, it’s important to find ways to save money. One way to do this is by looking for free things to do in your destination. There are usually plenty of free activities available, you just need to know where to look.

15. Decide on your budget, and stick to it

It’s important to set a budget and stick to it. This will help keep your spending under control and ensure you have enough money to enjoy your holiday. Make a list of what you’ll need to spend money on during your trip and try to stay within your budget.

Also using a Hostelworld discount code is a simple way to save money on your next adventure. By applying the code at checkout, you can instantly reduce the cost of your hostel stay, allowing you to stretch your travel budget further.

Bottom line

It can be tough to travel on a budget, but it’s not impossible. Just follow these tips and you’ll be able to explore the world without breaking the bank. Jacaranda Finance has all the information you need to make the most of your money when travelling.

If you’re travelling with others then I find it’s always best to talk to the others before you go and plan a few days of the holiday for trips out to places that you really would like to visit. Spur of the moments things normally end up costing more money.

Fantastic tips. When we are travelling with our 3 kids we research fun activities that aren’t as well known . This helps us avoid huge crowds & saves us having to wait in long queues for each activity .
