5 Lockdown Home Improvement Hacks

amomentwithfranca · 25 May 2020 · 26 Comments

In ordinary circumstances, even the most house proud amongst us don’t always notice when certain nooks and crannies of our homes are looking slightly shabby – we’re far too busy with the hustle and bustle of family and work to inspect our living spaces every day.

But during lockdown, it’s natural that you might notice that your interior could do with sprucing up, and those niggling deficiencies you would usually overlook can soon become seriously distracting.

However, with many DIY stores open and other firms offering home delivery, there are several simple domestic fixes you can undertake without the help of a tradesperson.

To help you get started, here are five lockdown home improvement hacks.

1.Kitchen Vinyl

If those chipped kitchen cupboards with peeling paint are getting on your nerves and another coat of paint doesn’t seem to make a difference, ordering an expensive new kitchen isn’t your only option.

Order self-adhesive vinyl from eBay and, provided you apply it carefully, your kitchen units will look brand new – be careful of those air bubbles if you want a smooth and seamless finish.

2.Wall Stickers

Wall stickers and decals are another excellent and economical way to personalise a living room, kitchen or hallway.

And when you order from a firm like Wallboss, you can design your own decal using their terrific templates, have it delivered and position it perfectly in a matter of minutes.

3. Remote Office Art

Is your remote office looking a little drab? You can add some cool products like for example a coloured acrylic splashback to your home office from Simply Plastics that will make this little area look very cool.

Or, if you’re a fan of edgy and creative tattoo art, you can purchase digital prints – colourful retro designs could be customised with your name or a motivational motto.

4. Skirting Boards

Now probably isn’t the time to turn your home upside down as you paint it from ceiling to floor – your family wouldn’t forgive you for the upheaval!

But by simply giving your skirting boards a fresh lick of paint, you’ll be surprised how clean and fresh rooms and hallways feel – plus, darker boards give a room a more contemporary feel, while lighter boards can make any space seem larger.

5. Doors

The design of your internal doors has a huge impact on the energy flow in your home – for instance, having a glass panelled door makes a space feel more open and airier, while a solid door might be preferable for a quiet study area.

Order stylish designs from Oakwood Doors and they can be delivered to your home where you can hang them yourself – it’s not as tricky as it sounds and there are several great instruction videos online from DIY specialist stores.

Try these five home improvement hacks and instead of getting frustrated as you sit on your sofa and scan your home, you’ll feel an enormous sense of satisfaction that you resolved the situation yourself – all while learning valuable new skills!

That’s our list! Let us know if you’re doing any home improvement during the lockdown in the comments section below.

Some great ideas we have vinyl in our kitchen as it was really outdated when we moved it didn’t want to buy a new kitchen while the children were still little so we made a quick fix.

I certainly agree with the dark skirting board. Other than the hall stairs and landing it is a theme we have followed through the whole house. I love the black skirting board look. We white on the stairs.

Regarding our home DIY, it’s been more cleaning out cupboards and all places in the home.

I’ve got a shed full to go to the charity shops when they open back up. I expect I will be one of thousands of us.

Done some minor jobs and been busy in the garden whilst the weather was nice

A great list, I’m not sure I’d trust myself with the kitchen cupboards, though I did once rip all the chipped coating off and paint ours instead. #KCACOLS

Some great tips here, thanks! I wish I had the time to do any of them though. My house is gradually being wrecked by my two year old twins more and more each day in lockdown! I’ve used stickers before in my four year old’s bedroom and they’re a great way to liven up a plain wall when you don’t want something permanent. #KCACOLS

We have definitely done a bit of DIY during lockdown and made the house a bit more ‘homely’. We are normally too busy travelling or out and about that we never get time to do the things we want to around the house. So silver linings and all that 🙂 #KCACOLS
