The much anticipated live-action Barbie movie has finally been released, and it’s already generating a lot of buzz, so we were very excited to go and see it.
Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the live action Barbie movie has been praised for its feminist message and its subversive take on the iconic doll. I took my eldest daughter Bella (13 years old) to see the movie. I didn’t take my youngest daughter (8 years old) but I’ll talk about that a little later.
What is the Barbie movie about?
The movie follows Barbie as she leaves her sheltered life in “Barbie Land” behind and steps — flat feet first — into the real world. There, she meets Ken and they embark on an adventure that challenges everything they thought they knew about themselves and each other.
Who Is In The Barbie Movie Cast?
Is the Barbie movie feminist?
The movie has been praised for its feminist message. It challenges traditional gender roles and shows that Barbie is more than just a pretty face. She’s also intelligent, independent, and capable.
Is the Barbie movie a comedy?
The movie is a comedy, full of funny moments and witty dialogue. However, it also has a serious message about the importance of being true to yourself.
Is the Barbie movie appropriate for children?
Can I take my children to see the Barbie movie?
The movie is rated 12A in the UK, which means you need to be 12 or older or accompanied by an adult if younger. Similarly, it is rated as PG13 in the US. However, some parents may find the movie’s messages and themes not to be aimed at children.
Why is the new Barbie movie rated pg-13/12A?
To me, the film feels like it is aimed at teenagers and adults who perhaps grew up with Barbie and how that fantasy world relates to the real world and how people live their lives. This is not a children’s movie. Of course, it’s up to parents to decide if it is suitable for their own children. From what I’d read beforehand, I decided not to take my youngest daughter who is almost 9 and for me, I think it was the right decision – I think she would have been a bit bored and not the movie she would have expected.
My eldest daughter Bella (13 years old) who saw the movie with me, enjoyed it.
Final Thoughts
The cast is excellent. Margot Robbie is perfect as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling is charming as Ken. The supporting cast is also great, with Will Ferrell (who always brings a smile to my face), Simu Liu, and Kate McKinnon all giving memorable performances. The visuals are stunning. The movie is a feast for the eyes, with its bright colours and elaborate sets.
The message is empowering. The movie sends a strong message about the importance of being true to yourself and following your dreams. Overall, I definitely recommend you to watch the new Barbie movie and therefore form your own opinion. This film is great, filled with heart-warming moments, empowering messages, and heaps of fun.
Have you seen the Barbie movie? Do you plan to see it? Let me know what you think.
Thanks for stopping by,
Love you all ❤️

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for this insightful blog post titled “Barbie Movie Review: Girl Power or Feminist Flop?” Your review beautifully captures the essence of the much-awaited live-action Barbie movie and its reception among audiences. It’s commendable that you’ve highlighted the casting of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as well as the movie’s positive recognition for promoting a feminist message and offering a fresh perspective on the iconic Barbie doll.
Your personal experience of taking your eldest daughter, Bella, to see the film adds a wonderful touch, reflecting the impact of such movies on young minds. Your intention to discuss the decision not to take your youngest daughter, and presumably exploring that in another post, demonstrates your thorough and considerate approach to reviewing.
