Is The Little Mermaid a remake of the Disney animated movie?

This 2023 adaptation is a visually stunning and heart-warming live-action remake of the beloved animated classic.

Director Rob Marshall does a masterful job of bringing the underwater world of the original to life. The film is full of breathtaking visuals, from the lush coral reefs of Atlantica to the bustling streets of Prince Eric’s kingdom. The musical numbers are also beautifully staged and performed, with Bailey’s rendition of “Part of Your World” being a particular standout. The underwater musical scenes with the amazing jellyfish and all their lights and colours were particularly wonderful to watch.

Who Is In The Little Mermaid Movie Cast?

Halle Bailey is great as Ariel, bringing the character to life with her charisma, singing voice, and emotional depth. There is also a great supporting cast, with Jonah Hauer-King as a charming Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as a deliciously wicked Ursula, and Javier Bardem as a wise King Triton.

While The Little Mermaid is a faithful adaptation of the original film, it also makes some welcome changes. The film is more diverse than the animated version, with a cast that includes actors of colour in leading roles. The film also takes a more nuanced look at Ariel’s decision to give up her voice for love.

Overall, The Little Mermaid is a delightful film that will delight fans of the original and newcomers alike. It’s a visually stunning, heartwarming, and musically-rich film that is sure to become a classic in its own right.

When is The Little Mermaid coming out?

The film is released in UK cinemas on 26 May 2023.

Our Thoughts

The Little Mermaid - Sienna at Vue Cinema

Here are some of the things we liked about the film:

  • Halle Bailey’s performance as Ariel is a revelation. She brings the character to life with her charisma, singing voice, and emotional depth.
  • The supporting cast is also excellent, with Jonah Hauer-King as a charming Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as a deliciously wicked Ursula, and Javier Bardem as a wise King Triton.
  • The film is visually stunning, with breathtaking underwater visuals and beautifully staged musical numbers.

The only negative we felt was the length of the film – it is a bit long at two and 15 minutes. This might be difficult if you have little ones.

Overall, we really enjoyed The Little Mermaid. It’s a visually stunning, heart warming, and musically-rich film that I think could become a classic in its own right. I highly recommend it to fans of the original and newcomers alike.
