It’s often said that the first year of marriage is the hardest but whether you’ve had a blissful start to married life or the first year has thrown you some curveballs, one thing is for certain – you’ll want to celebrate your first year together!
If your first wedding anniversary is on the horizon, and you’re looking for inspiration on how to celebrate, here are some great ideas for ways to mark this special occasion and celebrate your love for each other.
How to Celebrate Your First Wedding Anniversary
Your Paper Anniversary
Traditionally, a first wedding anniversary is known as the paper anniversary and historically, couples who had been together for a year would give each other gifts made from paper.
It’s thought that paper symbolised not only how marriage is still quite fragile and vulnerable at this early stage but also the fact that your future together is still a blank page, waiting to be written. Paper is also modest and inexpensive, which would have made it a more affordable gift for young couples still getting started in life.
Ways to Celebrate
There are lots of great ways you can celebrate your paper anniversary together. Here are just some of the ideas you might want to try.
Start a Tradition
As it’s your paper anniversary, why not put pen to paper and write down all the things you love about the other person and what you’ve enjoyed about your first year of marriage?
You could do this on a sheet of paper and then keep it in a special keepsake box to bring out in a year’s time and add in another for each year of your marriage. Or invest in a special journal or notebook to write in every year on your anniversary.
Take a Trip Down Memory Lane
Revisit the place where you said your vows to each other one year ago. This is a great way to look back and reflect on how far you’ve come as a couple. Try to make an occasion of it by booking a romantic dinner and a hotel room. If that isn’t possible, perhaps because you eloped or got married abroad, you could always go back to the place where you got engaged or had your first date instead.
Exchange Gifts
While first anniversary gifts would traditionally have been made from paper, you can always put your own spin on this. Tickets to an event you’ll both enjoy, for example, or a framed print. Alternatively, don’t feel you have to stick to tradition if you don’t want to. If there’s something you know that your partner would love, such as a pair of diamond earrings, then by all means, choose that instead. After all, this is your anniversary and you know each other best!
Get Away Together
Taking the time out of your day-to-day lives to go on a trip allows you to spend all-important quality time together as a couple and to discover new things about each other. Whether it’s a city break, a weekend of wild camping in nature or even a second honeymoon at an all-inclusive resort, the important thing is that you’ll be making new memories together.
