Walking the Italian Dolomites: 3 trails not to miss

1 Alta Badia

Central within the Dolomites, Alta Badia is a trail that has something for everyone.

From a range of elevations, up to 3,250 metres, there are walks available to suit all abilities. It’s perfect if you are with a group where walking abilities and experiences vary. Handily, Alta Badia is well signposted, another reason why this could be a go-to route if you’re newer to walking holidays.

Not only is Alta Badia appropriate for a range of different walkers, but it is also home to not one but two natural parks within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Dolomites. This is ideal if you are looking to fully immerse yourself in nature.

If you plan on visiting in the summer, it is well worth researching whether access to the trail is available via cable car.

2. Alta Via dell’Adamello

If you’re looking to witness some history while on your walk, the Adamello Trek could be the trail for you.

Featuring remains from the White War, which saw Italians and Austrians battle at altitudes of over 3,500 metres, this trail is not to be missed.

History isn’t all that’s on offer; having such a range of altitude means that the Adamello Trek boasts a variety of different ecosystems. These can be explored along the 70km trail, which connects numerous mountain huts along the way.

While the majority of this trail is considered relatively easy, it isn’t without more complex sections. Although these sections have been well equipped with steel cables and steps, it can still be a difficult walk if you don’t have experience on your side. Therefore, this route is only recommended to those who have at least some practice walking on difficult terrains. If you attempt this trail, it is also important that you are kitted out in the correct gear.

3. Alta Via 1

Alta Via 1

Covering 120km of land, with a high point of over 2,500 metres Alta Via 1 is certainly an experience you won’t forget.

Taking an average of nine days to complete, this trail will take you all the way from the north to the south of The Dolomites. This means you can take in some breathtaking views both whilst walking and during your stay in the mountain huts – ideal if you are a keen photographer.

Another one for the history buffs, similar to the Adamello Trek, Alta Via 1 also covers old battle sites from World War One.

In terms of difficulty, the terrain is relatively manageable for a range of abilities. That being said, with it being such a long trail, it is beneficial if you have the stamina to walk for upwards of five hours per day.

In conclusion, walking the Italian Dolomites is an unforgettable experience. Whether you choose to hike through the lush forests of Alta Badia, explore the dramatic landscapes of Alta Via dell’Adamello, or traverse the majestic peaks of Alta Via 1, you’re in for a treat. So, pack your bags, put on your hiking boots, and get ready to discover the beauty of the Dolomites on foot!

Not a holiday I’ve previously considered, but these look really exciting. As a novice I’d try the easiest route first – Alta Badia looks to be the most suitable.

I’ve always wanted to visit the Dolomites – my dad walked here in his youth and would always tell me stories when I was little.
