Whether they see them in their favourite storybooks or watch them on TV, most children have a favourite fictional character. The most popular characters are naughty but nice, love to play practical jokes, and always know how to make our children laugh.
Here are our favourite mischievous children’s characters that we can’t help but love:
Horrid Henry
Henry is a horrible little boy who takes great pleasure in tormenting his perfect little brother and driving his parents to distraction whilst they mutter ‘Don’t be so horrid. Henry!’ Despite his sometimes-questionable behaviour, however, Henry is a loveable rogue and his adventures always make children laugh.
There is a wonderful child-like simplicity to the character of Horrid Henry, and it is impossible not to smile with delight as his latest naughty prank begins to unravel. This explains why the Horrid Henry books have sold over 18 million copies. If you ever had any doubt that cheeky characters were best, just ask any child whether they prefer Henry or his little brother, ‘Perfect Peter!’
Peter Rabbit
Peter Rabbit doesn’t have a great start to life. His father was captured by the McGregors and eaten in a pie. Despite this, Peter doesn’t want to stay at home with his mother. He would much rather head out for a life of risk and adventure. He is a naughty rabbit who never takes no for an answer!
Children love Peter Rabbit because he is as cute as he is mischievous. Peter Rabbit toys are incredibly popular with children of all ages because they remind us that we can be as brave as Peter, whilst still maintaining our cute and cuddly exteriors. Get a Peter Rabbit Toy here.
Mildred Hubble
Mildred Hubble is officially The Worst Witch! Jill Murphy’s classic story tells of a witch who never manages to cast the right spells and never thinks about the consequences of her actions.
Mildred always knows the right tricks to play. From turning her classmates into pigs to dropping water buckets on the head of her teachers (from the safe distance of her broom, of course!) this is one cheeky witch that everyone wishes they could replicate! Whilst she may be the worst witch in the school, this fictional witch has stolen the hearts of children all over the world.
Tracy Beaker
Finally, for older children, Jacqueline Wilson’s multi-award-winning Tracy Beaker is the ultimate cheeky character that has everybody rooting for her.
Tracy is a lonely teenager growing up in a children’s home, and the Tracy Beaker children’s books and TV series follow her on her adventures. Tracy is naughty and mischievous because she often spends her time thinking up the kinds of revenge she would like to take upon her enemies. Despite this, the audience really wants Tracy to succeed. If you’re the parent of a teenager and have never read the Tracy Beaker stories, they are well worth exploring. They deal with a number of challenging issues in a simple and age-appropriate way.

Its the same with teenagers! As a secondary school teacher I can’t help but like the more cheeky children rather than the really quiet ones, as long as they are just ‘cheeky’ and not rude!

Sometimes cheeky children can be so funny, and its hard to keep a straight face, why youre trying to tell them its wrong to say what they are saying

Love Peter Rabbit – can’t wait for the new movie to come out. All of these are mischievous but there is always a lesson to learn in the programmes which is good.

That is very true! I agree!
Suzanne Gaulton says
Peter Rabbit is definitely a favourite of mine!
I volunteer in our school library and have to say I do like the kids who have a little bit of ‘personality’ about them – not too much attitude, just enough to make them an interesting character.
amomentwithfranca says
Yes interesting characters are my favourite too!
