This is the time of the year when we can be stuck at home with the kids trying to think of something to do to entertain them. Messy play is always a great idea as kids usually love that! Anything to do with getting dirty or messy is our kids’ favourite play, LOL! The problem is that if you don’t have anywhere convenient to do these kind of activites (such as a garden if you live in a flat), it can put you off doing this. Of course being able to clean up all the mess with wipes makes it easier to have messy play. If you know you can clean up all the mess with wipes in 10 minutes, the messy play starts to be a much more approachable idea, LOL!
I’m always aware of what a messy activity at home could mean and I’m always worried that my girls will dirty our living room furniture as there is no other suitable place. Yes I know it is not ideal but that is what we have. When Jonhson’s approached me and asked if I would like to do a Messy Play Challenge, I thought, “Mmm, I’m not sure if I would like to do that. Will it be too much mess to clean and tidy up afterwards?”. However, after thinking about it again I thought, “Why not? Let’s do the challenge and see what happens”.
Johnson’s Baby asked me to have a messy play at home using a special “messy play pack” which included paints and a canvas so we can create a ‘messy work of art’. They also included 2 samples of their new baby wipes that we could use to clean up all the mess that my girls made. It all sounded scary but I accepted the challenge anyway.
When the pack arrived it contained the following items:
- Poster Paint
- Paintbrush
- Stretched Canvas
- Apron
The samples of their new wipes that we received were:
Johnson’s Extra Sensitive Baby Wipes which are clinically proven to be safe as water on newborn skin. Free from alcohol, soap and fragrance, the wipes are suitable for even the most delicate and sensitive skin.
And Johnson’s Gentle All Over Baby Wipes effectively clean everything from wet bottoms to sticky fingers and delicate faces.
Both wipes have been formulated to minimise the risk of allergies. Both have a No More Tears formulation with the Johnson’s lotion consisting of 97% pure water. They have a brand new dispensing system which now dispense one wipe at a time. The new dispensing system ensures one wipe per pull, cutting down on waste so the packs last longer. Another of the new feature highlights is the rigid lid which allows for one-handed easy opening, making it easier for those on-the-go moments when your hands are full and all you need is one wipe. These newly designed compact packs fit perfectly into a changing bag or handbag! How great is that?
This new system is fantastic as it makes it much easier to use and is also quicker when you need to grab a wipe and great for cleaning during messy play, anything messy in general or when changing the baby nappies. I was very happy to have both wipes to use after this activity.
I left everything ready for my girls to go wild. I put a huge playmat underneath the messy pack. I put aprons on both of them and then let them freely explore. Of course I was there watching closely but I was very curious to see what they would do. They started very well, painting on the canvas. I was even thinking “Oh how nice, they are not being that bad and they are using the canvas to paint”.
They were starting some nice ideas to paint on the canvas and were enjoying choosing from so many different colours. The colours that came with the set were fab. There was some gold and silver which had what looked like glitter added to it. Sienna loved these colours the best.
Well, this nice moment only lasted for 15 minutes because after that the little one thought that painting her feet would be much more interesting than painting the canvas. So something that was supposed to be a nice painting activity become THE BIGGEST MESS EVER!
Oh my God, they didn’t just painted their feet but their hands and all their legs too. Bella who is 6 years old, and supposedly the older more responsible one, was in fact the leader of the mess. She was the messiest of them both! Not least because she decided to paint all of her leg with the deepest darkest red paint! She could have chosen any colour but she decided that red was going to be the best option. It looked like she has cut her leg and was bleeding, which made it not just a normal mess, but a completely horrendous messy, LOL!
I missed taking a photo of her leg completely red as I was starting to worry that she would paint all of her body so I was nearby with the wipes on hand just in case. I’m now laughing because of course these things only happen to me. Thankfully we had the wipes. When they finished they began the job of cleaning it all up. I must admit that I was very impressed with the wipes. They did clean a lot of the mess but there was a moment when I just had to carry them directly to the bathroom to finish cleaning them up. I knew that this was going to happen!
I then came back to the area where they had been playing and finished cleaning up with the wipes. It all ended up clean after all and the wipes were super easy to use. With the new system I was able to easily pull one wipe at a time so I didn’t waste them at all. I was very impressed with this.
Bella cleaning her leg. She was doing a good job I think. Almost gone.
I must admit that I haven’t used Johnson’s wipes because of this reason. They were not as easy to use before and I used to waste a lot of them. I definitely like a hard lid and for that reason I didn’t buy them but now they have relaunched with this, I will most certainly be buying them again.
The final art work was actually better than I thought, LOL! They did a very good job. I have put the painting in their bedroom for them to look at every day to remember this day that was actually a lot of fun!
Thanks so much to Johnson’s for sending us this messy pack. We really love the wipes and we also had so much fun!
What do you think of Johson’s new wipes? Do you like their new dispensing system? Have you tried them? Do you like doing messy play at home? Do you also use wipes to clean up the mess? Please leave a comment below as I would love to hear what you think.
*Disclaimer: I received this “messy pack” together with 2 samples of wipes in exchange for a blog post. However all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks for stopping by,
Love you all ❤️

It looks like the girls had a blast! We’ve been using the Johson Extra Sensitive Wipes on Piglet and I really like them – probably my favourite wipes so far (is it sad that I know which wipes I like and which I don’t? I think I need to get out more) #KCACOLS
Ha! There’s a reason it’s called MESSY play! It looks like they had a lot of fun. And baby wipes to the rescue! I agree those ones are much easier to use now. Amazing the fascination they all seem to have with painting all over themselves! My oldest daughter never liked getting too messy herself but I have a feeling her little brother and sister might be different. Haven’t been brave enough to try messy painting with my 19-month-old twins yet(!) but will do one day. #KCACOLS
They look like they are having a blast exploring that paint! wet wipe saves the day and it is good to know they are great to give the kids a clean over X #kcacols
What a glorious piece of artwork you now have. And yes, the plastic sheet is an absolute must. I would have freaked out to have that paint anywhere near my furniture or carpet. Love Pen x #KCACOLS
I much, much prefer wipes that come in a pack with the hard plastic lid, so much easier to use! I love your description of doing this painting with your two, I can just picture you having to hold yourself back and not stop them making such a mess, haha! I always have wipes on hand when I do painting with my two! x #KCACOLS
Soft furnishings and poster paint. You are brave.
And who knew there was so many types of baby wipes? #KCACOLS
Since my children started in childcare I must admit I tend to leave messy play to them…! Interesting that you’ve found the wipes easier to get out of the pack – I often rage at baby wipes when I end up with about 4 at a time!
#KCACOLS
My daughter always ends up painting herself! I have to admit I don’t do messy play very often but baby wipes are essential. When I do messy play I use a big roll of lining wallpaper and lay it across our kitchen floor (it’s tiled so easy to clean up) and just let the child go wild. It often ends up with her sitting in it though! #KCACOLS
Wow this pack looks fun they look like they had a greay time, even if you eldest painted her leg red. Way to go Johnsons for helping with the distribution of wipes, I hate when you try to pull one wipe and like a 5 wipes come out!!! #KCACOLs
Oh my goodness, looks like so much fun but I can only say that as it wasn’t my house! I must admit I HATE messy play with a passion, anything that involves paint, playdough, even aqua beads stresses me out as it just causes so much mess! Thankfully Mia is happy with doing messy things at Preschool 2 days a week! The wipes look really good, I hate pulling more than 1 wipe out at a time so I would be really interested in trying these out 🙂
#KCACOLS
Hehe! Love this! Looks like they had loads of fun even if Mummy was having palpatations at the leg-painting!
The new wipes sound great. I never used Johnson’s because they would bring Ernie out in a rash around his mouth if I wiped his face with them but I will try the new extra sensitive ones now. Especially with the new hard lid! Thank you for sharing! X #KCACOLS
The notion of messy play is something I love but then I’m not sure where to start. Sounds like the garden would be an ideal place for us. #KCACOLS
Looks like the kids had fun, I haven’t tried the new wipes with the hard lid but might give them a try. messy play seems like such a great fun activity might try it out with my son when he turns one but outside the house because I have very light coloured furniture #KCACOLS
Wow, what a fab challenge, it looks like your little’s had a lot of fun! I love Johnsons baby wipes, even though my children are much older (youngest is 8) they still come in very handy! (They also double as make up wipes for me, haha – they leave my skin SO soft!) #KCACOL
Looks like you all had a great time! I am drawn to these wipes because of them dispensing one at a time. I hate when you just pull out loads and loads. It makes like harder when you’re already trying o hold down a child who thinks they are an octopus for a nappy change! #KCACOLS
What a work of art they made! Looks like great fun was had !! I really like those Aprons! They seem to keep the paint of MOST of the body 😉 #KCACOLS
LOL I avoid messy play at all costs. I’m far too much of a clean freak! When we do do it there’s always wet wipes to hand. The dispensing unit looks really handy #KCACOLS
The really embraced the mess! I know my kids would as well if I ever get the nerve enough to try something like this. #KCACOLS
What a great idea. I always have wipes at the ready when it’s painting time. When it’s been hot outside we’ve been painting on the patio so it doesn’t matter if they make a big mess as they can then wash off any paint in the paddling pool. Loving the gold paint, I’m going to pick some of that up for my girls. Loving your new masterpieces! #KCACOLS
We are HUGE messy play fans! This looks great fun xx #kcacols
Wow, a very messy play day, look like the kids had fun. Great wipes if they get all that red paint off!:)

Oh my goodness, that looks like so much fun!!! I love how you just let the girls go off on their own and explore with the paint-it really looks like they had a blast. I’m really interested in the rigid top of the wipes, and may go purchase a pack just so I can see what the new technology looks like. Thanks for sharing! <3 #KCACOLS
We love messy play! It is such a valuable experience and so engaging for children – but I agree, it can be so hard to let go as an adult and let them be wild! Whenever I did messy play in class you could guarantee my head teacher would walk in to observe me and probably thought I was out of control!!! It can be hard to explain the importance of it and how the creative freedom is such a learning process. Clean up can be hard though right??! Arthur has really sensitive skin so these sound great! I am never without a pack of wet wipes of some sort! A bath/shower is usually the only solution when it gets very messy though #kcacols
I love a bit of messy play… Love it even better when we can do it outdoors and let rain wash our mess away!!
How did parents survive before wet wipes eh?! #KCACOLS
I love the red and gold foot! What a great look! Messy play is fun, we don’t do it often enough, I suppose. I do intervene when necessary. Last time Emma was doing hand painting and started getting a bit carried away with painting her hand, going up her arm as well! The plastic mat and aprons are the most important things to have, that’s for sure! #KCACOLS
