What to See While Touring Europe | Amazing Art Galleries, Museums, Palaces

amomentwithfranca · 22 September 2022 · Leave a Comment

Want to know what to see while touring Europe? Europe might be one of the smallest continents in the world, but it is not short of tourist attractions. While some countries in Europe are known as tourist hotspots, others also have places that will appeal to visitors from other continents. Considering Europe’s small landmass, tourists can easily take a train from Salzburg to Budapest or a road trip from Malaga, Spain and across neighbouring countries.

What to See While Touring Europe?

This article will expose various places you can see while touring Europe. This post will appeal to art lovers as we focus on art galleries, museums, and palaces that simply take your breath away. Let’s get started:

Table of Contents

  • What to See While Touring Europe?
    • Uffizi Gallery, Florence
    • Prague Castle Picture Gallery
    • Vatican Museums, Rome
    • Palace of Versailles, Paris
    • Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
    • Louvre, Paris

Uffizi Gallery, Florence

You can start your tour from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. You will be overwhelmed by the world’s most important paintings and artworks. Some of the must-see artworks are Giotto’s Ognissanti Madonna, Piero della Francesca’s Federico da Montefeltro, and Paolo Uccello’s Battle of San Romano. However, what drives most tourists to the gallery is Botticelli’s Birth of Venus.

You should expect a crowd of tourists in the galleries. But, you can avoid the long ticket lines by booking yours in advance. You can also book a guided tour and get a history lesson while you enjoy the sights.

Prague Castle Picture Gallery

A tour of European art spots does not always have to be in Italy, France, or Britain. If you want to visit less crowded places, you should go to Prague. You can experience over millennia of Czech culture at the Prague Castle Picture Gallery. Several galleries showcase works from notable names like Peter Paul Rubens, Bartholomeus Spranger, Vivano Codazzi, and Girolamo Bedoli.

The Castle displays a permanent collection of 100 paintings of the 4,000 it possesses. However, these artworks will leave an imprint in your mind. After viewing them, take a Prague to Bratislava train to see the renowned Slovak National Museum.

Vatican Museums, Rome

A visit to the Vatican Museums in Rome is necessary on an art tour of Europe. The museums are all notable, housing many artworks featured in popular culture. You can spend a whole day in the museums exploring the pieces of the past in the paintings, sculptures, and maps.

You should book your ticket to the Vatican Museums in advance. The museum is usually crowded with tourists looking to see Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel or some of the other famous artworks. Also, ensure your outfit covers your shoulders, neckline, and thighs, or you won’t be allowed to enter the museum.

Palace of Versailles, Paris

When you mention visiting a palace in Europe, the first palace many tourists think of is not Buckingham Palace. It may be the most spectacular palace on the continent, but it is only open for a few months annually. This is why historical palaces like the Palace of Versailles appeal to tourists.

In addition to its being occupied by the royal family until the French revolution in the 18th century, the palace is a historical landmark. Notable spots attractive to tourists in the Palace include the Coach Gallery and the Estate of Marie Antoinette. The Palace of Versailles is designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and hosts millions of visitors annually.

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is a must-see for any art lover interested in the post-impressionist period. The museum holds the most extensive collection of Van Gogh art globally and makes the museum the most-visited in the country. Post-impressionism art enthusiasts and Van Gogh lovers can look at his life through the works he made at various times.

Most of the artworks displayed in the Van Gogh Museum are Van Gogh’s works, and understandably so. However, there are displays of the artworks of other artists like John Russell, Claude Monet, and Edouard Manet. The similarity among these works is that they are all from the impressionism and post-impressionism period.

Louvre, Paris

A list of what to do while touring Europe will not be complete without including the legendary Louvre. The Louvre is unarguably one of the most remarkable museums in the world. You should set aside a particular day to explore this spot. There are so many artworks spanning several centuries that you cannot finish admiring them in a day.

While at the Louvre Museum, take some time to dwell on the structure’s history, which dates back to the 12th century. After leaving the museum, you can visit some nearby attractions like the Seine river. Remember to take some nice pictures in front of the glass pyramid.

A tour of Europe is a treat for art lovers. There is an abundance of galleries featuring historical and contemporary artworks. Most museums will take you on a time to travel through historical sculptures and ornaments. Finally, don’t forget to visit palaces that housed the historical royal families.

Have you been to any of these iconic places? What do you think of these suggestions about what to see while touring Europe?
